What began as a personal passion for sharing the landscapes of home has grown into a team of dedicated guides and travel specialists, each bringing their own expertise and stories to every journey.

Roots Along the Route

Ravine-puffin was founded by a small group of friends who grew up exploring the forests, beaches, and mountains of the Garden Route. We spent our childhoods swimming in river pools, hiking through indigenous bush, and learning the names of birds from parents and grandparents who had done the same.

When visitors began asking us to show them the places we loved, we realised something important: the best travel experiences come not from ticking off landmarks, but from understanding the rhythms and stories of a place. The way light falls differently in the forest at various times of day. The quiet spots where wildlife gathers. The family-run restaurants where recipes have been passed down for generations.

What Guides Our Work

Every decision we make starts with a simple question: does this serve both the traveller and the place? The Garden Route faces pressures from development and climate change, and we believe tourism can either contribute to these challenges or help address them.

We choose partners who share our values—lodges that employ local staff, restaurants that source ingredients from nearby farms, and activity providers who maintain genuine respect for the environments they operate in. These choices sometimes mean we're not the cheapest option, but they ensure every rand spent contributes to the region's wellbeing.

Knowledge Passed Between Generations

Our guides don't simply memorise facts from guidebooks. Many have family connections to this land stretching back generations. They know which trails flood after rain, where to find the shy Knysna loerie, and how the fishing communities along the coast have adapted their practices over decades.

This depth of understanding transforms a journey from sightseeing into genuine discovery. When you walk through the Tsitsikamma forest with someone whose grandmother collected medicinal plants along the same paths, the experience becomes immeasurably richer.

Our Commitment to Conservation

Tourism and conservation can support each other when approached thoughtfully. A portion of every booking goes directly to conservation initiatives along the Garden Route, from marine protection programmes to forest rehabilitation projects.

We also work closely with SANParks and local conservation bodies to ensure our activities align with protection goals. Some areas we simply choose not to take groups, preserving sensitive habitats even when access would be legally permitted.
